This leads to the conclusion that the exploitation of a food resource where the predator can reach the prey for only a limited time and is only a limited area is a high-risk strategy. It is therefore not surprising that, from time to time, seabirds such as kittiwakes and terns encounter food shortages in the breeding season and breeding failures occur. While some of these failures may be induced by commercial overfishing, it should not be unexpected to find that failures can and do occur naturally and without human intervention.

Another possibility is that the fish stocks have declined markedly in recent years, perhaps as a result of excessive overfishing by humans, or even as naturally occurring events. Stocks of some commercial fish have been monitored over many years and the size of stocks has been shown to have changed dramatically in recent years. Perhaps these are best demonstrated by the changes in stocks of Cod in the North Sea, which have not only declined over 46 The Kittiwake time, but the average size and age of individuals have decreased dramatically.

Despite having a relatively low energy content, they were frequently taken by kittiwakes (and terns) when they were abundant. They also were frequently rejected when fed to kittiwake chicks and were commonly left on the nest before eventually falling into the sea. Some have suggested that when kittiwakes take pipefish, it is an indication that they are suffering from food shortage, and so are forced to take ‘junk food’. I am not convinced that the capture of pipefish necessarily indicates a general food shortage, and consider it more likely that kittiwakes are capturing these fish simply because they had become numerous and they fell into the general size category of their prey.
