We know too little about social conditions at this time, moreover, to classify all Cambodian kings as despots. Some of them, as far as we can tell, accomplished little or nothing; others left scores of inscriptions, temples, statues, and public works. The fact that they came from India (just as our polysyllables so often come from Greece and Rome) was not considered a reason for alarm.
