What GirlZone organizers took away from these events was the need to have spaces to hash out the complex issues involved in activism. Community members must have neutral spaces and multiple opportunities to engage each other even if, perhaps especially if, they disagree. Since activism at GirlZone generally meant feminist activism, organizers wanted GirlZone to be a place where people did not take up predetermined “feminist” positions, whatever these might be. In sync with, yet initially unaware of, a new generation of feminist writers who felt that second-wave feminisms were essential but insufficient,15 GirlZone organizers began the bumpy process of building a community that would question what “feminist” activism is, who gets to define it, and how to validate differences while staying unified enough to forward their agendas.

Questions such as these are not new and were certainly being asked by others in the youthquake,41 yet I found them compelling. As a feminist living in the second- and third-wave tensions of the mid-1990s, I believed feminism was still relevant, but was unsure how to understand and represent this relevance.
