There are at least five myths about the relationship between environment and pover ty: 1. Myth 1: Most environmental degradation is caused by the poor. In fact, it is the other way around: The wealthier classes are responsible for the most serious forms of environmental degradation. By the sheer necessity of sur vival the poor may overgraze the land and deplete the forest of fuel wood, resulting in local deforestation, subsequent topsoil erosion, and surface water contamination and runoff causing flooding.

In terms of population planning, therefore, managing population increases in the developing countries between now and 2020 is the biggest challenge. While population growth may cause some environmental degradation, it is not as significant as that caused by other types of activities. Also, the poor may cause limited environmental degradation, but they do so out of necessity of sur vival and have little choice. It has also been demonstrated that, if the poor experience a slight improvement in their income, they will probably do something else to earn their livelihood rather than take as much as they can from the land and the sea.

One impor tant reason to believe that we are due for such an accelerated change of technologies in the direction of more sustainability is the current and growing competition for petroleum-based fossil fuels. In 2004, the PRC impor ted about 90 million tons of petroleum products, while the US impor ted about 400 million tons. By 2020, the PRC will impor t 400 million tons. Also India impor ted about 90 million tons of oil products last year, and India’s demand in 2020 will be significant, though not as high as the PRC’s.
