This era’s anarchist politics and movements, at their best, represented a nonstatist form of socialism rooted in working-class and peasant communities. 9 foundational experiences During the first decades of the twentieth century, this politics found something of a home in the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), a militant labor union active in the United States and Canada. Founded in 1905, the IWW organized expansively, developing campaigns among textile workers in Massachusetts and New Jersey, teamsters in British Columbia, lumber workers in the northwestern and the southeastern United States, miners in Nevada and northern Ontario, and many others.

These requests generated dozens of suggestions per city. I sorted through these suggestions with four criteria. First, I looked for organizers who might be understood as “anti-authoritarian” using the principles mentioned above. Second, I looked for people who were involved in grassroots organizing outside, or in addition to, activist scenes. Third, I looked for organizers who were reflective about their work, had strong critical analysis, and had deep political commitments. Fourth, I tried to get a broad cross-section of people in a given city, specifically in terms of race, gender, class, sexuality, political history, current work, and organizational affiliations.

And finally, this is for those who are interested in social movements and social change. To you, I offer this book to suggest that we can learn the most about movements, social relations, and perhaps humanity itself by participating in collective fights for justice and dignity.
